ToggleWHAT HAPPENED?
Mbappe swapped Paris Saint-Germain for Madrid in the summer but has not hit the heights many would have expected of him. The France international is playing as a number nine rather than in his favoured left forward role, with Vinicius Junior occupying that spot at Los Blancos. Now, Cyril Linette, the former CEO of French newspaper , believes Mbappe would have been better off moving to a team such as Manchester United.

WHAT LINETTE SAID
Linette told : “I’m not saying that Mbappe is heading towards failure but he is joining a club where, in his position, there is a player at least as good as he is. It makes no sense. He will have spent his whole career playing at clubs where there is a left winger at least as good as him, with Neymar at PSG and VinĂcius Jr at Real.
"He could have gone to England… tried to get Manchester United going again, for example. There, he could have played in his position and could have written a great story. I don’t see what exceptional things he can achieve at Real, who have already done everything without him."

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Mbappe has struggled to replicate the form he showed at PSG with Madrid so far. He has scored nine goals, three of which were penalties, and notched two assists in 17 appearances. But it does feel like Madrid's system is not getting the best out of him. It may be too soon to say the move was a mistake, however.

WHAT NEXT?
Mbappe could feature for Madrid in their crunch Champions League clash with Liverpool – a team he was linked with in seasons gone by – at Anfield on Wednesday night.
